Is Schumer a shill for the top 1%? You betcha!

Today's NYT has an article which caught my eye. The title: In opposing Tax Plan, Schumer Breaks with Party. Now, Schumer is a Senator from New York, where most of the hedge private equity funds roost. I realize they are a part of his constituency..but please..they are NOT humans. Sure, humans run them and make money from them...but they are NOT people, and folks that use these types of investments aren't trying to make ends meet.

But Schumer holds a two very important posts that relate to hedge funds and private equity funds, he is on both the Banking and Finance committee's. In fact..Chuck raked in more than $1 million large for the Democratic Senatorial Committee from these guys.

The NYT article calls him "Pro-business"..I call him a shill for the top 1%. Perhaps that is a little harsh..but you can not call yourself a supporter of the middle class AND a supporter of the hedge and equity funds. Nope, you really can't do that Chuckie.

There is a bill in the works that wants to raise the taxes on these types of investments. Even Hillary, Obama and Edwards have come out in support of these taxes that will provide revenue for health and educational programs..not to mention relieve some of the burden of taxes on the middle class. I mean..really now..if Corporate-loving Hillary can support it..it can't be all bad for investors right?

But Chuckie has his state and its employers to think about he says. There is this interesting tidbit in the NYT writeup:

"Mr. Schumer said in an interview that he was torn between the need to protect an industry vital to his home state and the need to generate revenues to finance government programs. He said a tax increase on private equity and hedge fund executives could lead to an exodus of jobs and companies from New York, and even from the country. He said the plan, if enacted federally, would also lead to an increase in New York State tax that would further bear down on the industry. He said he worried that the industry was being unfairly singled out."

I call bullshit on that right now. So does the other Senator from NY, Charles Rangel. I am sick and tired of businesses using the "we will move our operations if we don't get what we want" shtick..I could puke. It's a time-honored tradition for them to use that line isn't it? It's a threat to get what they want.

Well, the middle class has been getting the ever-loving shaft for decades now..and they need a friggin break, not the damn hedge and equity funds. Hell, even a senior exec from Citigroup, Robert E. Rubin is calling this tax a good move for the love of Christ. Joe Schocken, the chairman of Broadmark Capital, an investment banking and private equity firm in Seattle, backs the bill and calls it fair.

This tax move will raise billions annually. It will only hit those top 1%ers remember..so I don't give a Rats Ass who Chuck Schumer's voting base is..this tax isn't going to kill off any investors or cripple the damn industry, because its folks that make a shit-load of cash every year and don't work for it..you know..unlike the middle class that works for their money.

Schumer's stance on this bill really pisses me off. I have always thought highly of him until this came out. If Hillary the biggest Corporate Shill alive can back it..so can Chuckie damn it. And if he doesn't see the light I will have to call him what he is..a carpetbagging sumbitch who will once again fuck over the middle class so those that already have their nest eggs can get their greedy little fingers on more money they won't be able to spend in their lifetimes.

Come on Chuck..give the middle class a fucking tax break for a change and put some money into the federal coffers for educational programs you fuckwit..screw those top 1%ers....Stop pandering to them. If there is any doubt why Chuckie panders to these guys..get a load of this nugget from the NYT writeup:

"From January through June, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee raised nearly $2 million from executives and employees of private equity and hedge fund firms like the Carlyle Group and the Blackstone Group, according to analyses of campaign finance disclosure reports conducted by the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan group that researches the influence of money in politics, and by The New York Times. The $2 million figure, which includes contributions from relatives of employees and executives, is a low-end estimate because many donors do not list their employers on financial disclosure reports."

Ain't that something? You bet it is..and it smells like fresh dog poop if you ask me.

Bush relative nixes report because it doesn't match BushCo's objectives.

Anyone surprised by this story in WaPo?

I didn't think so. Pretty damn pathetic when you can't release a Surgeon Generals report because it doesn't cater to BushCo's bullshit objectives. What really chaps my hide is that the freak who is blocking this report has no background in public health or medicine.

Guess any asshole appointee can pull this crap with Bush's blessings. William R. Steiger your a real prick...your family is probably very proud of you. The report contained information on the following, per WaPo:

The report described the link between poverty and poor health, urged the U.S. government to help combat widespread diseases as a key aim of its foreign policy, and called on corporations to help improve health conditions in the countries where they operate. A copy of the report was obtained by the Washington Post.

Just another exercise to keep us in the dark and feed us bullshit by the folks leading our country.

White House For Sale..

Public Citizen has fired up their Presidential candidate website. Its called: WhiteHouseForSale.org and you can find all sorts of interesting data on all the candidates running for the highest office in the land.

Of course all this info won't make it feel warm and fuzzy..but it will enlighten and educate you as to what these folks and their friends are doing. Check out the section on Campaign Bundlers.

BushCo wants to give the Saudi's a huge Arms Deal...

I almost swallowed my tongue when I read the headline at the NYT at 1am: U.S. Set to Offer Huge Arms Deal to Saudis. The reason is that many folks, such as myself, are still convinced the Saudi's are part of the problem in the middle east.

Thats because most of the 9/11 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia. Also the majority of insurgents from outside Iraq are not Iranians..they are Saudi's my dear reader..

So, what does BushCo have planned for these smarmy individuals? Why they plan on giving them plenty of firepower..all told..roughly $20 Billion dollars in arms. From the NYT link above, we get a laundry list of what BushCo wants to give these batshit crazy folks:

The proposed package of advanced weaponry for Saudi Arabia, which includes advanced satellite-guided bombs, upgrades to its fighters and new naval vessels, has made Israel and some of its supporters in Congress nervous. Senior officials who described the package on Friday said they believed that the administration had resolved those concerns, in part by promising Israel $30.4 billion in military aid over the next decade, a significant increase over what Israel has received in the past 10 years.

Isn't that just wonderful? So..we just arm BOTH sides of the Middle East crisis to solve the problem..Christ, what assholes are running this looney bin?

Oh yeah..the cowboy from Crawford.

BushCo is the terrorist Bush has warned us about.

The Crisis in this administration has reached a level that should be, by using their own Homeland Security gauge..Severe.

Because the Terrorist's are in the White House and anyone or any Department they control.

Pat Tillmans death might now be murder, The Department of Justice is being led by a Liar who has been contradicted by the head of the FBI and the former second in command at his own DoJ. This drama has reached a lowpoint never seen in the history of our country.

Even Watergate was a walk in the park compared to these Asshats and what they have done to us as a country and the world at large.

Congress has to step up to the plate. They are the only ones that can put a stop to this madness. But we all know that won't happen. Because of the small margin of a one vote majority in the Senate, nothing can change without the help of the Rethuglicans.

And we ALL know those sumbitches won't do shit. They will back their leader all the way over the cliff..like lemmings to the sea.

We are watching a slo-motion death march my dear reader and I fear for our country.

Senate issues subpoena for Rove, wants special prosecutor for GonzoGate

From MSNBC:

Senate Democrats called for a special counsel to investigate whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales lied under oath and subpoenaed top presidential aide Karl Rove Thursday in a widening probe into the dismissal of federal prosecutors.

"It has become apparent that the attorney general has provided at a minimum half-truths and misleading statements," four members of the Senate Judiciary Committee wrote in a letter to Solicitor General Paul Clement.

Fred Thompson..his trial lawyer dayz...

The subtitle is intriguing in the WaPo article: "Cases Indicate Willingness to Defy GOP Orthodoxy" is it not? The article goes on to list cases ol' Freddy has taken..like the 14 tons of Cannabis just for an example.

The article also tells us how Freddy supports and aligns himself with various lawyer groups who historically are despised by the Rethugs on The Hill. Its 3 pages long so bring your lunch.

WaPo evidently did their homework for this piece..its a good read check it out in the link above.

It was 2 years ago today...

I started my political blog here at Leftwing Nutjob. Before that I had posted a fluff and sports blog over at a blogspot that shall remains nameless....merely because I don't have the time or inclination to do that one anymore..and..its not important any longer to me to rant about sports..but I still love sports don't get me wrong..but I digress.

My first post here was on...lol..Karl Rove and how he will never be brought to Justice as long as King George is in office.

How fucking prophetic of moi! Not really. It was a very short rant..only a few sentences in fact and no links to whatever I was pissed about at the time.

The next one was a little more in-depth and had a link or two. Huey Newton was my subject and I know of which I speak. But still, I was timid and not ready to go balls out and rip up people like I do today.

A couple of posts later we have my rant against the NRA and a hairball move they put on Columbus I think it was..pulling out of a scheduled convention there because of a recent law passed by their city council. I really let the f-bombs fly and used the 's' word in the title. I think I started finding my voice so to speak. But what I really loved about that post was the picture I put up. In tiny letters you might not be able to read..the chihuahua is telling the Great Dane-Fuck You:
Click for Larger!

What a difference time and history's shittiest President makes...

So I changed up the look here, as I did last year at this time. But this year it's bolder. I like the ripped edgy border of the main column. It says a lot about how things have evolved here at Leftwing Nutjob.

Lazy says I love to make him think about shit that pisses him off. He's right of course. I hope to someday have less shit that pisses us all off and more humor, but it's going to take a freaking load of work by everyone to get to that place.

Here is hoping next year it looks better from this side of the aisle..but I ain't holding my breath dear reader.

Schumer, Gonzo and the gang of 8

Chuck was the last man to question Alberto today. He asked direct yes or no questions of the man who heads our country's Justice Department. He asked about the meetings with the gang of 8. Schumer asked him direct yes or no questions regarding the clandestine meeting with a barely lucid John Ashcroft at the hospital.

Uncle Al side-stepped each and every friggin one of those direct questions. That's a surprise I know..Watch Specter and Leahy grill this bastard on YouTube Here.

Al tried to discredit Comey's previous testimony before the committee regarding the warrentless spying on Americans.

Simply put, Alberto Gonzales is a Shit-stain on the Department of Justice in these here United States.

EDIT: Tomorrow morning at 7 freaking AM on the left coast..the House Jusdiciary committee will take up the matter of Contempt of Congress Citations on Cspan3..don't miss it!

Russ Feingold and Censure

He might not get far with his censure movement..but the man has the courage of his convictions, you have to hand him that ok? His site has the following message up and he asks you to speak your mind to him here.

Millions of Americans agree that the time has come to demand accountability from the President and his administration. The two censure resolutions that Senator Feingold proposed will hold the President, Vice President, and the administration responsible for the destructive path down which they've taken our country. The White House can no longer be allowed to shred the constitution, and thumb their nose at the American people, at every turn.

Now we know why Halliburton dumped KBR

From the NYT a snippet to pique your interest:

Federal investigators have uncovered what they describe as a sweeping network of kickbacks, bribes and fraud involving at least eight employees and subcontractors of KBR, the former Halliburton subsidiary, in a scheme to inflate charges for flying freight into Iraq in support of the war, according to court papers unsealed yesterday.

The latest conviction in the cases related to the scheme came yesterday, when a former Houston-based executive for an air-freight carrier hired by KBR pleaded guilty in federal district court to dispensing bribes and then lying to federal investigators. The executive, Kevin Andre Smoot, 43, of The Woodlands, Tex., served as a managing director for Eagle Global Logistics Incorporated, a carrier that received a subcontract from KBR to ship the freight.

The guilty plea by Mr. Smoot is the second by an Eagle executive in the case. But the papers describing his plea indicate that investigators believe at least one more Eagle employee and five KBR employees, all so far unnamed, were also involved. Mr. Smoot alone admitted to delivering bribes, called gratuities in the legalistic language of the court papers, to the employees of KBR on some 90 occasions between 2002 and 2005.

At the core of the case is a contract that KBR, previously known as Kellogg, Brown & Root, won before the war to supply the American military with food, fuel, housing and other necessities. The value of the contract soared with the Iraq invasion, and has so far paid KBR some $20 billion.

This is the tip of the iceberg. The MSM needs to be all over this crap..the 24/7 News screamers do too. Frankly, this made me yawn and say..bfd, where the hell you folks been for the last 6 years???

The real question is..how complicit are the federal fuckwits?

James Comey has some advice for Bush: Hire Fitzgerald for Atty General

This is rich. The Former #2 man at the DoJ has a stunning bit of advice for King George. A snippet from the Bloomberg article via RawStory:

Fitzgerald Deserves Top U.S. Law Post, Comey Says (Update3)

By Patricia Hurtado and David Voreacos

July 20 (Bloomberg) — Patrick Fitzgerald won the convictions of four Osama bin Laden associates in May 2001. In March, he got Lewis “Scooter” Libby. Last week, he nailed Conrad Black.

Fitzgerald, 46, isn’t saying what he’ll do next in his career. Friends and colleagues say he probably will remain a prosecutor rather than join a law firm. One colleague says Fitzgerald’s destiny may include the top law-enforcem ent job in the country: U.S. attorney general.

“I think he would make a spectacular attorney general,” said former Deputy U.S. Attorney General James Comey, now general counsel at Bethesda, Maryland-bas ed Lockheed Martin Corp., the world’s largest defense contractor. “He certainly is one of the very best federal prosecutors in America.”

Remaining a prosecutor would distinguish Fitzgerald from predecessors in the Chicago post. James Thompson became Illinois governor and chairman of Chicago’s Winston & Strawn. Dan Webb succeeded Thompson as chairman of the law firm, whose partners earn more than $1 million a year. Fitzgerald, son of an ex-Park Avenue doorman, makes $145,400. Yesterday, he eliminated one option, telling a radio show host he won’t run for public office.

Fitzgerald “doesn’t look at any of these cases as a springboard for something else,” said David Kelley, a former U.S. Attorney in New York who ran that office’s Organized Crime and Terrorism Unit with Fitzgerald. “He’s drawn upon his own innate sense of what is right and wrong.”

If anyone in America still thinks the carpetbagging sumbitch named Alberto Gonzales can still uphold America's laws and protect it's people..they are part of the 20%ers that still drink the NeoCon Koolaid.

The votes are in and counted in Turkey.

The ruling Party, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party maintained control but lost 10 seats in the Parlement. Erdogan is a heavy-duty Muslim. At a rally today he said, per AP:

"We will never make concessions over the values of people, the basic principles of our republic. This is our promise. We will embrace Turkey as a whole without discriminating," he said at a rally in the capital Ankara."--Erdogan, a devout Muslim, told supporters in his victory speech that he would preserve pluralistic democracy and work for national unity.

I haven't formulated thoughts on how this affects the current situation in the Middle East. But I know it will affect it somehow, it's inevitable. Turkey is a different type of Muslim Democratic structure.

It's a whole different animal my dear reader. The TimesOnline has this pov:

The election will determine the nature of Turkish democracy, the identity of the Turkish state and whether a restless younger generation is prepared to defy the threats of a conservative military Establishment to launch the fifth coup since 1960.

The Guardian had this to say:

The election was called early to defuse a showdown with the military-backed, secular establishment, which contended that Erdogan and his allies were plotting to scrap Turkey's secular traditions despite their openness to the West.

Erdogan raised concern with his efforts as prime minister to make adultery a crime and appoint former Islamists to key positions. Critics were also troubled by his calls for the lifting of restrictions on the wearing of Islamic headscarves
.

I just know it isn't going to be simple..and it will affect the Kurds and Iraq in general. Turkey is considering whether to stage an offensive into northern Iraq against separatist Kurdish rebels who rest, train and resupply at bases there.

Sigh....

Inspector General Confirms Probe of Rogue FBI Anti-Terror Office

Nothing in the MSM about this, but Wired has it:

The Justice Department's Inspector General and the FBI are investigating an office that sent fake, emergency letters to telecoms requesting phone records, according to the Inspector General's office. That office lacked the authority to request the records and did not apply for the subpoenas promised in the letters.

That information largely confirms a a Wired News story from last week, which revealed that top FBI officials told privacy groups that a criminal investigation of the office was underway and that individuals had been granted immunity.

If the investigation looks into possible criminal violations of fraud statutes or a violation of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, it would mark the first known investigation of government employees for violations of the Patriot Act.

Cynthia Schnedar, the Counsel to the Inspector General, confirmed Thursday that a joint investigation was being conducted by the Inspector General and the FBI. She declined to specify if the investigation was criminal or administrative, saying the office's policy is not to characterize investigations.

As to whether individuals in the Communications Analysis Unit had been granted immunity, Schnedar also declined to comment, saying "I can't talk about ongoing investigations."

The Communications Analysis Unit, a part of the FBI's counter-terrorism branch that is tasked with helping agents make sense of electronic communications records, sent more than 700 so-called "exigent letters" to telecoms requesting phone records of more than 3000 phone numbers.

According to the current head of the unit, the office has no authority (.pdf) to send the letters themselves, included false promises in the letters that subpoenas had already been applied for, and did not follow-up to make sure that proper legal documents were later sent. Three phone companies, including AT&T and Verizon, were under contract with the FBI to process emergency requests and did not balk at repeated requests, even after previous requests were not followed up with subpoenas or National Security Letters.

The fake emergency letters came to light in March in an Inspector General report which found that FBI agents misused and under-reported a key Patriot Act power known as a National Security Letter. So called NSLs allow terror investigators to subpoena financial, phone and internet records, without seeing a judge, by certifying the targets are relevant to a terrorism or intelligence investigation. The letters typically come with a gag order that prevents the recipient from ever speaking of the subpoena. Though warned in 2001 to use the power sparingly, FBI agents used the power to collect information on 143,074 persons from 2003 to 2005.

Have I told you lately how I have come to think that the FBI stands for Fucking Bureaucratic Idiots?

Court rulesBushCo must reveal data on Gitmo Prisoners

This morning's NYT has a read that made me feel somewhat gratified:

A federal appeals court ordered the government yesterday to turn over virtually all its information on Guantánamo detainees who are challenging their detention, rejecting an effort by the Justice Department to limit disclosures and setting the stage for new legal battles over the government’s reasons for holding the men indefinitely.

The ruling, which came in one of the main court cases dealing with the fate of the detainees, effectively set the ground rules for scores of cases by detainees challenging the actions of Pentagon tribunals that decide whether terror suspects should be held as enemy combatants.

It was the latest of a series of stinging legal challenges to the administration’s detention policies that have amplified pressure on the Bush administration to find some alternative to Guantánamo, where about 360 men are now being held.

Hope the bastards in the Executive Branch are pissing down both legs over this one. Fuckers..

Bush getting a medical procedure, Cheney to run the Country

Damn, could Cheney get the opportunity to launch a nuke attack on Iran this Saturday? Per MSNBC:

President Bush will undergo a "routine" colonoscopy Saturday and temporarily hand presidential powers over to Vice President Dick Cheney, White House press secretary Tony Snow said.

Snow told reporters Friday that Bush will have the procedure done at his Camp David, Md., mountaintop retreat.

The last time Bush had colon and rectal cancer surveillance was on June 29, 2002. Doctors then advised him to have another colonoscopy in five years.

You KNOW Cheney wants to nuke Iran. This is his chance..

Bush pushes the envelope on Executive Privilege

They are really running scared with this newest reaction to Congress's threat of contempt charges regarding the firing of the USA's. BushCo said flat out that the Justice Department will never be allowed to pursue contempt charges initiated by Congress against White House officials once the president has invoked executive privilege. Per a WaPo article out this morning a senior official has stated:

"A U.S. attorney would not be permitted to bring contempt charges or convene a grand jury in an executive privilege case," said a senior official, who said his remarks reflect a consensus within the administration. "And a U.S. attorney wouldn't be permitted to argue against the reasoned legal opinion that the Justice Department provided. No one should expect that to happen."

This is outrageous. This is pure unadulterated bullshit my dear reader. BushCo is saying that Exec. Priv trumps everything. That he makes the rules and Congress has no authority.

And it doesn't trump everything..no sirree.. Not in the commission of a crime. Not in a free Democracy and not in the United States of America. He isn't a king and he certainly isn't Hitler..although you might get an argument from me about George being a reincarnated version of da fuhrer.

I have been waiting for 'this other shoe' to drop since I wrote this piece Wednesday about Executive Privilege. I knew that Bush and his minions would not sit still for contempt charges being brought by the Justice Dept.

Surely you, my dear reader, didn't either. A final quote from the WaPo writeup:

But Stanley Brand, who was the Democratic House counsel during the Burford case, said the administration's legal view "turns the constitutional enforcement process on its head. They are saying they will always place a claim of presidential privilege without any judicial determination above a congressional demand for evidence -- without any basis in law." Brand said the position is essentially telling Congress: "Because we control the enforcement process, we are going to thumb our nose at you."

The shit is about to hit the fan. I just hope the Congress is ready for it. Its not going to be a cakewalk..and they better not pussy out on this.

Voters take it in the shorts in Michigan

Those friggin activist judges in MI. The Supreme Court of the state of Michigan has ruled in favor of Voter ID's. From Jurist:

The Michigan Supreme Court Wednesday upheld a voter ID law in that state, ruling against critics who argued that the ID requirement is essentially a poll tax. The 5-2 decision was split down party lines, with the Republican majority deciding that since voters who don't have a photo ID can vote after signing a sworn affidavit regarding their identity, the argument of a de facto poll tax was unfounded. Supporters of the ID law say that a photo ID is necessary to prevent voter fraud. The law was initially passed in 1996, but former Attorney General Frank Kelly refused to prosecute under it, arguing that it was unconstitutional. The law was renewed in 2005. Numerous voter ID laws have been challenged in the courts, with inconsistent rulings across the states. Laws in Indiana and Arizona have been upheld, while one in Missouri was struck down last year. AP has more.

We interrupt our political rants..

I never talk about my world. It's against my better judgment. I mean..its so boring for the love of God. But I do have days where its not bad from here.

Lately the ball and chain has been bringing up politics. This my dear reader is extremely unusual. I have literally chased him around the house trying to discuss an issue or what have you and it ends with him locking himself in the bathroom.

He has taken an interest in bringing things to my attention that he thinks he is scooping me on. Of course thats not possible, lets be realistic, I get a million news alerts and updates from every known media source during the day. Its my thing for Christ's sake.

We have baseball already. Sports in general. But he has really been sitting and talking political issues. I have also toned down my rhetoric as I have a tendency to raise my voice, my eyes bug out and the f-bomb's start flying around. He is after all, a conservative from the old school.

But the operative phrase there is "old school". They are no longer bad people, almost moderate on many issues like spying on us, taking care of those who can't and spending our money like a drunken sailor on leave. I did convince him to NOT vote for Ahnold the last time around. He almost went for Angelides but backed out at the voting booth...

My point..possibly..is that labels are shifting in their meaning. We have allies where we never thought to look. We need to cultivate them.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi's are really getting active protesting and bitching their ever-loving asses off about the proposed Oil Law. You know the one..where they sell their souls to the devil and don't even get kissed first.

The All-nighter was interesting...and boring as hell.

I wanted to keep track of how many times the warmongerers used their favorite buzzwords and slogans. But sadly they put me to sleep on several occasions. Never fear however, the good folks at Alternet stayed awake and had the same idea I did. Below is their all-star list of who said what and how many times during the all-night sleepover in the Senate plus several of the screwups:

Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX)

Desperate Buzzphrase Count:

  • "Cut and run" 6
  • Kit Bond (R-MO)Freudian slip in describing the alleged dangers of a troop withdrawal: "If we were to leave Iran without finishing the job…" said Bond.

    Yikes.

    Desperate Buzzphrase Count:

    • "Retreat and defeat" 3
    • "Cut and run" 2
    • "Run and leave" (See "Cut and run")
    • "Embarrass the president" 1

Jim DeMint (R-SC)DeMint referred to Democrats as the "minority party" until Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) jumped in to correct him.

    Desperate Buzzphrase Count:

    • "Retreat" 1
    • "Embolden our enemies" 1
    • "Embarrass the president" 1

    Jim Bunning (R-KY)Desperate Buzzphrase Count:

    • "MoveOn.org" 2
    • "Cut and Run" 2
    • "Follow us home" 1
Also, NO ONE got as much face time as John "Weathervane" McCain did. I think that sumbitch spoke at least 4 friggin times, plus I just saw his nasty mug again a few minutes ago as I write this. WTF? Did they all feel sorry for his sorry-ass campaign? Who knows..

Hillary literally put me to sleep. Something about her voice I guess..

    Executive Privilege my Ass!

I know folks; I possibly tackled this subject before here. But recently our Decider-in-Chief has used the term for anything and everything when it comes to Congressional oversight regarding the actions of his minions on vital issues and even some not-so-vital issues like the death of Pat Tillman.

    Let’s start off with the Congressional Research Service’s report on Executive Privilege. The CRS in their own words is “the public policy research arm of the United States Congress. As a legislative branch agency within the Library of Congress, CRS works exclusively and directly for Members of Congress, their Committees and staff on a confidential, nonpartisan basis. The sole mission of CRS is to serve the United States Congress.” This report was updated in 2004, long before all the bravado and bs started coming out of our Executive Branch in spades. It’s a 33-page document so bring your lunch if you plan on reading the report I linked to above. The report lists the history of Executive Privilege, the amount of times it has been invoked and by whom. It’s an important document that I think everyone should read at some point in George Bush’s final days. Lets go to the report;

There are 74 incidents that I counted of White House executive branch employees testifying before Congress. This begins in 1944. There are 8 instances where they refused to testify. Even the Watergate disaster did not stop the President’s men from testifying before Congress, men such as Jerome Jaffe Special Consultant to Nixon, Fredrick Buzhardt Special Counsel to Nixon, Alexander Haig even testifed..the list has a total of 5 of Nixon’s ‘minions’ that testified before a Congressional committee regarding Watergate. You can bet your sweet patootie that none of those men wanted to testify…but they did. When Clinton was in office, Congress literally dragged the Presidents entire staff before a committee investigating Whitewater and later..Monica and her blue dress. Since 1975, 10 senior administration officials have been called to testify before Congress, but the pissing contests were all resolved before getting to court. No president has mounted a court fight to keep his aides from testifying on Capitol Hill in this era.

Now we come to George Bush’s presidency. The Decider has now invoked Executive Privilege regarding the Army Ranger Pat Tillman’s death. The White House has refused to turn over documents in connection with the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee's investigation into the death of Cpl. Pat Tillman, citing…you guessed it.. Executive privilege. Interestingly enough, an examination of the documents released by the Department of Defense shows the White House selectively withheld documents which did not fall within their executive privilege claim, and the White House may have ignored a warning from a top military official in order to disseminate the totally fictional story of Tillman's death.

Sara Taylor showed up for her time in the Congressional committee spotlight..but said nothing of importance. Again, she was ordered to remain silent by the White House based on..executive privilege. A good and loyal Bushie..she defied the committee.

Harriet Miers and her inability to even show up used executive privilege as her excuse per The Decider and his minions as well. She defied a House subpoena at The Decider’s request. She is facing contempt of Congress proceeding as I type this. Per the transcript for the Countdown show Monday night, this is what could happen to ol’ Harriet:

And while observers speculated that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales would decline to enforce such a finding, the House warned last week that it might circumvent Gonzales and try Ms. Miers in-house on a charge of what is known as “inherent contempt,” one that was last used more than 70 years ago.

Jonathan Turley is a professor of Constitutional Law at George Washington University. He was on Countdown Monday evening discussing executive privilege and ‘inherent contempt”. Here is part of his interview on the subject of inherent contempt:

TURLEY: Well, people may not realize this, but Congress routinely used to try people. In fact, in 1796, they held a full trial for a person for congressional bribery. They would routinely send the sergeant-at-arms who had arms and weapons to use and men to collect people and bring them to the Congress against their will, and they could hold them for the period of that session of Congress.

And they did this so often it actually became something of a burden. They still have that power, to hold the trial on the floor for someone in contempt. But they decided that they would be best to leave that to the Department of Justice so that they could increase the penalty and so that they did not have trials every week on the floor.

Sadly, we have a corrupt Department of Justice under Alberto Gonzales. Our Congress might finally have to invoke this centuries-old routine in order to hold BushCo and his cronies accountable for the lies and batshit foisted upon us, the people of the United States, under the guise of executive privilege. Mr. Turley also had a very memorable quote regarding BushCo’s use of executive privilege; let me share it with you:

But the White House seems to be invoking executive privilege if anyone is within a 25-mile radius of the building. It is as clever and as elegant as a meat cleaver.

That’s our President..as elegant as a meat cleaver. And just about as intelligent. What could the White House be hiding with respect to the Pat Tillman affair? Your guess is as good as mine..but these crooks and liars need to be ferreted out and dealt with in a manner that will embarrass and humiliate them. The grief that they have caused us on the international stage not to mention here at home is disgusting on every level. These warmongering fools have and will continue to attempt to circumvent the rule of law and our right to know every chance they get. It has to stop…NOW. Congress needs to rent the proverbial set of balls and take these carpetbagging sumbitches to the woodshed..but in full view of we, the People. They owe us that much.

Randy Cunningham sings like a canary

TPM has the links to the transcripts up from FBI jailhouse interviews held in Feb of this year, with Randy Duke Cunningham. Here is one and here is the FBI affidavit. All pdf files of course.

I don't want to spoil it for you..but Brent Wilkes ain't gonna be happy..nope..not one damn bit. A small snippet: “Cunningham stated that, by 2000, he had already been receiving numerous benefits from Wilkes that included such things as vacation trips, liquor, cash/maintenance money . According to Cunningham, in return for these benefits, he had been helping Wilkes/ADCS in their efforts to secure government contracts.”

Wilkes faces 30 counts in two separate indictments, including charges that he gave Cunningham $600,000 in gifts and cash in exchange for Cunningham's help in getting more than $80 million in defense contracts. Wilkes' two trials are expected to occur this fall. The government has not said if it will bring Cunningham back to San Diego to testify.

God, I hope they bring the Dukester back for Brent's trials. San Diego's local rag has more.

Will we see an all-nighter tonite?

From TomPaine.com: History buffs, and those with long memories, will recall the last time conservatives found something important enough to stand up and obstruct all night long: the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The one that outlawed discrimination in public accommodations.

Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) explains how history is being made tonight:

Hundreds of Iraqi's protest Oil law

Since the MSM won't be all over this, we are forced to get the 411 via the French Press and Common Dreams:

About 300 oil industry workers gathered in Iraq’s main oil port of Basra on Monday to protest a draft law that they said would allow foreigners to pillage the country’s wealth.”

To compensate for the military and political failure of the US administration in Iraq, this administration is trying to control the country’s wealth,” the organisers said in a statement distributed to reporters.

“If this is endorsed by the parliament it would abolish sovereignty and hand over the wealth of this generation and the generations to come as a gift to the occupier,” the statement said.

The protesters, employees of the Oil Pipelines Company, wore black surgical masks over their faces and carried banners and black coffins with the word “freedom” written on the sides.

At issue is a clause in the draft hydrocarbon law allowing for production-sharing agreements with foreign oil companies, which many Iraqis see as a throwback to an earlier era of colonial exploitation.

“This law, in fact destroys the achievements of the Iraqi masses and especially the Law number 80 of 1961 and the nationalisation of 1973,” the statement said.

The law from 1961, part of a bundle of socialist reforms issued by then-Prime Minister Abdul Karim Qassim, sharply limited foreign involvement in the oil sector.

US officials see the passing of the draft hydrocarbon law — aimed at equitably distributing Iraq’s oil proceeds — as a crucial benchmark of the country’s political process and a key component of national reconciliation.

Guess the Iraqi's aren't too fond of carpetbaggers stealing the only thing they got.

Here is a video of the event.

Most Outside Insurgents in Iraq Come from Saudi Arabia

With Bush and his military minds spouting hate and discontent towards anything Iranian..this story in the LAT, via a writeup at Editor & Publisher is pretty interesting:

The Los Angeles Times reports today that according to a senior U.S. military officer and Iraqi lawmakers, about 45% of all foreign militants "targeting U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians and security forces are from Saudi Arabia." Only 15% are from Syria and Lebanon; and 10% are from North Africa. This is based on official U.S. military figures made available to newspaper by the senior officer.

Nearly half of the 135 foreigners in U.S. detention facilities in Iraq are Saudis, he said.

This lie stacks up quite nicely with the biggest of them all..that Iraq was involved in 9/11.

Yet, they are BushCo's BFF aren't they?

The sick part is..the 9/11 bombers were from Saudi as well. And a section of American's still believe Iraq was involved in 9/11 and all the bad guys in Iraq are coming from Iran and Syria.

Those 'senior military officials' giving us the truth better be careful...

    Al Qaeda come on down!

The lousy and very suspect 10 month truce with the local tribal leaders and the government of Pakistan has ended. This bullshit truce, according to most experts, gave Al Qaeda a place to train and rest in Pakistan in between killing American and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

So, do we mourn the end of this 'truce' or just chalk it up to the usual bs that it was all smoke and mirrors from the get-go?

I say the latter..also Musharraf isn't making any new friends either.

Who does this man think he's kidding?

Look at him..and then read the words he uttered at a Press Conference in the Green Zone:

"We say in full confidence that we are able, God willing, to take the responsibility completely in running the security file if the international forces withdraw at any time they want."

Ok, I am convinced now that Bush and Maliki were separated at birth. They have to be..they are both..very freaking delusional..if they think for one stinking minute..that ANYONE with two brain cells to rub together believe anything that comes out of their pieholes. I mean..I really did this when I read Maliki's latest spin...bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha..seriously, I did my dear reader.

Plus you should notice they are both fond of invoking "God" when they speak.

Lawd help us..please..save us from these idiots extraordinare.

Does Bush have Petraeus by the short hairs?

The President of the United States covered his lily-white ass this week by tossing out the name of General David Petraeus 12 times in one speech this past week . He is trying to buy himself some time by mentioning his good buddy with regards to the war in Iraq. WaPo has a writeup about how much this administration has put all its hopes and dreams on Gen. Petraeus's upcoming September surprise aka his 'report' which will be due to Congress and King George. Bear in mind..this is the 4th General to 'lead' the war in Iraq my dear reader..

Someone at WaPo has been keeping track of how many times the Decider-in-Chief has invoked the name of General Petraeus this year when talking about how well it's going in Iraq, or who is leading us to the promised-land there. Care to hazard a guess? Come on...just one..

Ok..per the WaPo piece: Bush has mentioned Petraeus at least 150 times this year in his speeches, interviews and news conferences, often setting him up in opposition to members of Congress.

These speech writers for Bush need to be fired..or at the very least someone needs to tell them to get a new shtick. When we are inundated with the same tired rhetoric every single speech the Shrub delivers...it becomes propaganda my dear reader.

Poor Petraeus. Does he know he is the fall-guy? He seems like an intelligent man. Like the Generals before him..he will take the heat for the failure that is the Iraq War..its coming soon..but not soon enough for me or the 70% that want the war to end now.

Bwahahahahahaha! They really want to win over Black America

With all the candidates vying for TV time and places to tell their stories and platforms..this just BEGS for some attention. See this stage below..look at how many Republican Candidates showed up to the NAACP Republican Candidate Forum:

    Tom Tancredo..thats it!!!

Tommy the Tool was the only Repube candidate to show up. He is the wingnut that blames illegal immigrants for every ailment in America and he hasn’t found a lie about them he doesn’t love and repeat a zillion times.

What is more glaringly obvious than how little the Republicans respect Black America and their biggest support group is the fact that the MSM buried this little tidbit. So did the Evening News shows.

If anyone hasn’t figured out by now how complicit the MSM is with all the bigotry and bullshit put out by the Republicans. .this picture is worth a million words.

All the Democratic candidates showed up to their NAACP Forum btw. The Republican’s excuse you might ask?

    They were too busy.

When will Bush stop connecting 9/11 and Iraq?

When will this asshole give it a fucking rest? There is NO connection, never was and never will be ya moron. Anyone with the IQ of a dandelion knows this. George had the nads to invoke the most holy of Iraq War Lies today:

"In rebuffing calls to bring troops home from Iraq, President George W. Bush employed a stark and ominous defense. "The same folks that are bombing innocent people in Iraq," he said, "were the ones who attacked us in America on September the 11th, and that's why what happens in Iraq matters to the security here at home."

Jesus Christ on a crutch. Is he retarded? His speech writers are retarded? Who the fuck is the idiot that keeps putting that shit into his speeches? On Thursday alone, he referred at least 30 times to Al Qaeda or its presence in Iraq.

    Blah blah blah..Al Qaeda blah, blah...Al Qaeda...terrorists..blah blah..Al Qaeda.

Seriously these mental midgets need some new writers..its downright pathetic how stupid they look. 10-year old's know its a bag of bullshit.

The IHT article linked above points out a little history in case Bush is reading their writeups:

Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia did not exist before the Sept. 11 attacks, and it has thrived as a magnet for recruiting and a force for violence largely because of the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, which brought an American occupying force of more than 100,000 troops to the heart of the Middle East.

Al Qaeda is everywhere. They are embedding themselves around the globe..and we can thank George Bush for that shit. I know bullshit when I smell it, after 6 years of it, isn't hard.

Lugar: 2002 war authorization is “obsolete and requires revision.”

In a moment of sanity, it seems Senators Richard Lugar and John Warner have filed an amendment today that "would require the president to seek a new rationale for the war authorization by the time Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top military commander in Iraq, delivers a report in September on the progress of the troop buildup. The measure also would require the president to review and update the National Intelligence Estimate for Iraq no later than Sept. 4."

I am all for anything that gets us the fark out of there asap. I don't think this will do it, but something has to change, and both sides of the aisle have to find common ground and push Bushs buttons.

Iraqi Army goes downward, contrary to Bush's pov

Bush saw a half-full glass when he put his 'spin' on the report, but the important stuff wasn't touched on in his press conference. WaPo gives us a view of the finer points of the 'report' on Benchmarks:

Despite stepped-up training, the readiness of the Iraqi military to operate independently of U.S. forces has decreased since President Bush's new strategy was launched in January, according to the White House progress report released yesterday.

Combat losses, a dearth of officers and senior enlisted personnel, and an Iraqi army that has expanded faster than the equipment available for it have resulted in a "slight reduction" in the number of units designated at Level 1 status, or "capable of independent operations," the report said.

But the fine print in the 25-page document contains some remarkably candid descriptions of problems, as well as qualifiers for claimed achievements and briefly referenced, unexplained new facts.

The Pentagon refused yesterday to elaborate on the "slight reduction" in independent Iraqi units. Any information about the number, size or designation of such units is "in the classified realm," said a spokesman, Lt. Col. Mark Ballesteros.

Bush and his boyz really can spin the obvious..then they just bury this shit. Its an old trick similar to LOOK, look at the shiny object..isn't it pretty!

And then they take you for all you got. Are you talking Divisions or Battalions gents? It's a valid question..are they still sucking the teat of the US military or are they 'fully independent"? The writeup goes on to say the Iraqi Military has been going backwards more than forward in the readiness department. Gee, that's a shocker!

The article also goes on to explain how technically, the Iraqi's look good on paper regarding their commitment to rebuilding their own infrastructure, but the truth is...

They haven't released even a quarter of the money needed to begin work. They will get ALOT done that way right? Perhaps they are a tad worried about all the graft and corruption that is rampant in the government? Ya think???

It also touches on other benchmarks that are suspect as to how well Iraq has performed. Oh yeah..that is a REAL hair-raising statement there.

Harriet a no show..The House is pissed.

The 7-5 vote that rejected Bush’s executive privilege claim is the first step toward holding Miers in contempt of Congress.

President admits administration leaked Plames name

In a stunning disclosure today, King George had this to say today about PlameGate:

President Bush on Thursday acknowledged publicly for the first time that someone in his administration likely leaked the name of a CIA operative, although he also said he hopes the controversy over his decision to spare prison for a former White House aide has "run its course."

"And now we're going to move on," Bush said in a White House news conference.

Right..we will forget it and move on..sweet Jesus on a Ritz..wtf? Pardon me dude but thats a heavy-duty admission coming out of your lying ass. Oh, then there is this:

Bush would not directly address answer a question about whether he is disappointed in the White House officials who leaked Plame's name.

"I'm aware of the fact that perhaps somebody in the administration did disclose the name of that person," Bush said. "I've often thought about what would have happened if that person had come forth and said, 'I did it.' Would we have had this endless hours of investigation and a lot of money being spent on this matter? But, so, it's been a tough issue for a lot of people in the White House. It's run its course and now we're going to move on."

Yep, he saved the ass of his pals and sorry bout your luck Valerie Plame but there are other more important things than keeping our governments secrets in the name of political gain to address.

He then prattled on about Scooters upcoming pardon by saying: "As to the future, I rule nothing in and nothing out,"

Oh no kidding. This is a shocker. And he says it all with a straight face. The stench of arrogance had to be strong in that room, I am telling you.

And that my dear reader is your BushCo moment for today.

Boehner goes after his own party members.

Now that a few of the Repubes are publicly airing their grievances regarding Bush's Iraq War and its blatant failures over the last 4+ years..House Minority leader John Boehner, behind closed doors, called Senator George Voinovich,a fellow Repube, a wimp yesterday for calling for a change of course in Iraq and saying the “surge” has failed.

See what happens when you tell them the truth to their face? They flip the fuck out on ya. Even their own party members. Damn, thats nasty isn't it? Boehner branded Senator Voinovich and a plethora of Republican Senators, including Richard Lugar (IN), Olympia Snowe (ME), Chuck Hagel (War Hero-NE), Pete Domenici (NM) and others who have recently repudiated the President’s policy in Iraq “wimps.

Lets harken back to February of this year. Thats when Boehner was crying like someone stole is lunch on the floor of the House chamber. Here, lets roll out the pics to refresh your memory:

That, was just the first of TWO episodes where Boehner weeped his ass off in front of the rest of the House of Representatives.

Who is the fucking wimp here people? Seems to me that John Boy Boehner doesn't know what a wimp looks like..he needs to look in the fucking mirror to figure it out. The Repubes calling for an end to the war are standing tall, not crying in their beer using the most basic of emotions to dramatize the effect of their words. Thats Boehners shtick.

Perhaps he was off his meds when he broke down in the House those two times this year? In any case calling the Repube's that disagree with him wimps is pretty pussified coming from someone that can stand there like a cry-baby blubbering incoherently in front of a gathering of adults there to discuss important issues like the War in Iraq.

Wotta whiny bitch you are John-boy.

    Pew Research has a goodie..

They aren't just a polling company..they research this stuff over years, decades even. This one is particularly interesting because it matches up with what progressives have been saying all along...

The Muslims aren't any different that white evangelicals.

Well, no shit sherlock..The title of the analysis is:

In Intensity of Religious Identity, Not Unlike Evangelicals

Although Muslims constitute a small minority in the United States, and their holy book and many of their religious rituals are distinctly their own, Muslim Americans are by no means "the other" when it comes to religious life or politics in the United States. In many ways, they stand out not so much for their differences as for their similarities with other religious groups.

In their level of religious commitment, Muslim Americans most closely resemble white evangelicals and black Protestants. In their basic political orientation, they closely resemble black Protestants as well as seculars. When it comes to their views on some social issues, such as homosexuality, Muslims' conservatism matches that of white evangelicals. Muslims are even more likely than evangelicals or any other group to support a role for government in protecting morality.

    Religion

Muslims account for less than one percent of the country's population, whereas eight-in-10 Americans are Christian. Recent public opinion surveys by the Pew Research Center find that, with respect to the intensity of their religious beliefs, Muslim Americans most closely resemble white evangelicals and black Protestants. Within all three groups, large majorities (72% of Muslim Americans, 80% of white evangelicals and 87% of black Protestants) say religion is "very important" in their own lives. Those notably high percentages set all three groups apart from Catholics (49%) and white mainline Protestants (36%).

The link above will take you to the rest of the analysis of the data. The Repubes can choke on this one, believe me. They only need to look in a mirror to see what a terrorist-loving Muslim looks like.

Oh, btw..they both think their religious beliefs should be utilized through the legislative process to define our morals.

Terrorism, thy name is Theocracy and our Republican leaders are no different than the people they screech about wiping off the face of the earth. Guess it takes one to know one.

Nothing more uplifting than an Angry Black Bitch

I get FireDogLake's email of their daily roundup of posts each night. Its a group blog and they post plenty. This one post caught my attention so much..I had to post about their post. Let me start off by saying this issue no longer affects me. But I availed myself of the right to have such a medical procedure once in my life and I thank GOD I was able to get it.

Angry Black Bitch is a wonder to behold. She has reclaimed the word "bitch" for starters...I have done that as well, its a badge of honor for moi, but I digress, this is about Her. Her post is about the governor of her state, Missouri. Its about the bill he signed IN A CHURCH. Seems he was trying to kiss some extremist ass, doing a mea culpa of sorts. He laid out a set of "new rules" for clinics that provide abortions. To put it bluntly my dear reader...

It's turning into a police state in Missouri. That ain't right. That people would support this bill is some scary shit indeed. Its about control over what clinics can do and how they do it. The new bill will cost clinics millions to remodel and hire staff to meet the criteria.

It will also cause some clinics to quit offering a perfectly legal medical procedure..an abortion.

I just hope to hell that there is a decent judge on the bench in Missouri to hear this case. It has to be taken into a court of law because evidently the state of Missouri is being run by Theocratic, bigoted, narrow-minded, assholes who think it's their right to be up in everyone's business when it comes to receiving what is STILL a legal medical procedure. From a Kansas City writeup on the new law; The new law, which will take effect Aug. 28, also bars people affiliated with abortion providers from teaching or supplying materials for sex education courses in public schools, and it allows schools to offer abstinence-only programs. It cements into state statute an existing grant program for centers that encourage women to deliver babies instead of having abortions.--WTF?? It will pay clinics a bonus to talk women out of a legal medical procedure??? I hope Planned Parenthood has the ACLU on speed dial my dear reader..because old Mitch actually brags about screwing with a womans right to Reproductive choice. Look Mitch, you friggin blowhard ass-kissing sumbitch, Roe v Wade doesn't say EVERYONE has to get an abortion...it says women have the right to have one if circumstances in their lives dictate such a procedure.

Stop by ABB's blog and show her some support. Not that she needs it, she is a one woman wrecking crew..and I heart her for that. Do it because she deserves to hear voices of support, not the trolling fuckwits that have been hanging around with nothing better to do that call her out for speaking her well-educated mind and showing the world what a bunch of assholes can do when they get the power to control our lives.
