The year in Corruption

Click the image for a larger version in all its glory!

A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful folks over at TPMmuckraker. They have taken the time to build a list of who's who in the world of political corruption for the past year. Their standards were strict my dear reader, which is why Karl Rove didn't make the cut. They insisted on proof positive that the individual was guilty of corruption..and sadly, no one has actually busted/indicted Krazy Karl yet. Hint: the list contains 39 infidels and 5 still under investigation. Also, a TPM reader, DavidSilver, has created a nice pictorial homage to these fuckwits here. Now, onto the list!

Indicted / Convicted/ Pled Guilty

* Eric G. Andell - deputy undersecretary in charge of newly created Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (previously senior adviser to Secretary of Education Rod Paige) - pleaded guilty to one count of conflict of interest for using government travel for personal causes and was sentenced to one year of probation, 100 hours of community service, and fined $5,000.

* Claude Allen - Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy- resigned, pled guilty to shoplifting from Target stores.

* Lester Crawford - Commissioner, FDA - resigned in late September 2005 after only two months on the job. On October 17th, he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts, making a false writing and conflict of interest. On February 27, 2007, Crawford was sentenced to to three years of probation and was fined $90,000.

* Brian Doyle - Deputy Press Secretary, Department of Homeland Security - Resigned in wake of child sex scandal. Doyle was arrested on April 4th, 2006 and pleaded no contest on September 19, 2006 to seven counts of use of a computer to seduce a child and sixteen counts of transmitting harmful material to a minor. On November 17th, 2006 Brian Doyle was sentenced to five years in state prison and ten years of probation. He will also need to register as a sex offender.

* Steven Griles - Deputy Secretary at the Interior Department - is the highest-ranked administration official yet convicted in the Jack Abramoff scandal. In March 2007, Griles pleaded guilty to lying about his role in the Jack Abramoff scandal. Sentenced to 10 months incarceration.

* John T. Korsmo – Chairman of the Federal Housing Finance Board from 2002 to 2004 – pleaded guilty in 2005 to lying to the Senate and an inspector general. He swore he had no idea how a list of presidents for FHFB-regulated banks were invited to a fundraiser for his friend's congressional campaign. On the invites, Korsmo was listed as the "Special Guest." Got 18 months of probation and a $5,000 fine.

* Scooter Libby - Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff - resigned after being indicted for lying to a grand jury and investigators in connection with the investigation stemming from the leak of Valerie Wilson’s covert CIA operative's identity. Convicted on four of five counts, making him the highest-ranking White House official to be convicted of a felony since the Iran-contra scandal. Sentenced to thirty months imprisonment and a fine of $250,000. On July 2nd, after a judge decided that Libby would remain in prison during the appeals process, President Bush commuted Libby's sentence by removing the thirty months in prison.

* David Safavian - former head of the Office of Federal Procurement Policy at the Office of Management and Budget - convicted of lying to ethics officials and Senate investigators about his ties to lobbyist Jack Abramoff. On October 27, 2006, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison. He is currently appealing the ruling.

* Robert Stein - former comptroller and funding officer for the now disbanded Coalition Provisional Authority, Southern Central Region in Al-Hillah, Iraq - pleaded guilty to conspiracy, bribery, conspiracy to commit money laundering, possession of a machine gun, and being a felon in possession of a fire arm. On January 30, 2007 Stein was sentenced to nine years in prison and ordered to forfeit $3.6 million.

  • Roger Stillwell - desk officer, Interior Department - pleaded guilty to failing to report Redskins tickets and free dinners from Jack Abramoff.

The rest of the infidels list is quite long..so you need to click here to check out the rest of these smarmy bastards.

Bring your hip-waders, its getting thick..

The doctors who attended to Benazir Bhutto have run as fast as they can from the government's version of how she died. You remember that one don't you? The 'hitting her head on a lever' line? From the NYT writeup:

Athar Minallah, a board member of the hospital where Ms. Bhutto was treated, released her medical report along with an open letter showing that her doctors wanted to distance themselves from the government theory that Ms. Bhutto had died by hitting her head on a lever of her car's sunroof during the attack.

In his letter, Mr. Minallah, who is also a prominent lawyer, said the doctors believed that an autopsy was needed to provide the answers to how she actually died. Their request for one last Thursday was denied by the local police chief.

Seems to be quite the cover-up doesn't it? Her husband didn't want an autopsy, the government didn't want an autopsy..but her doctors and everyone else in the world want one.

In other news..Bhutto's 19-year old son will lead the PPP party..assisted of course by his father, Asif Ali Zardari. That is one helluva load to put on a kid that isn't even old enough to drink yet. In another surprise move, Nawaz Sharif, another former prime minister, also decided Sunday to call off his previously announced boycott of the vote. From the NYT writeup:

The announcement that Ms. Bhutto's first-born son, Bilawal, an Oxford undergraduate with no political experience, would lead her party was made at a chaotic news conference at the family's ancestral home here in a southern Pakistan village.

His father, Asif Ali Zardari, said he would manage the chairmanship on his son's behalf until he finished his university degree, for a minimum of three years.

To make it interesting, Bilawal is changing his last name from Zardari to his mothers maiden name..Bhutto. Things in Pakistan keep getting curiouser and curiouser..

The biggest and best bullshit lines of 2007..from both parties.

This is courtesy of FactCheck.org. They do not play favorites as you will see. But it does tell us how full of bullshit and bravado BOTH parties are, which is a crying shame if you ask me. But you didn’t..so without further ado..the long-ass list of bs foisted upon us as the truth and nothing but the truth:

What follows is not an exhaustive list, but a sampler of the worst falsehoods and distortions that we uncovered during the year, in no particular order. For more details and our documentation on any of the items, follow the links to read the original articles.
This is a fairly long writeup, so bring your lunch or just skim for the goodies.

Image is everything..even to the CIA

Check out this article at the NYT today. Its all about how important image has become to the boyz and girlz at the CIA. Seems the CIA was paranoid that Abu Zubaydah would die whilst in their custody, so the following is what they did to protect their 'image':

So in the spring of 2002, even as the intelligence officers flew in a surgeon from Johns Hopkins Hospital to treat Abu Zubaydah, who had been shot three times during his capture in Pakistan, they set up video cameras to record his every moment: asleep in his cell, having his bandages changed, being interrogated.

In fact, current and former intelligence officials say, the agency's every action in the prolonged drama of the interrogation videotapes was prompted in part by worry about how its conduct might be perceived — by Congress, by prosecutors, by the American public and by Muslims worldwide.

That worry drove the decision to begin taping interrogations — and to stop taping just months later, after the treatment of prisoners began to include waterboarding. And it fueled the nearly three-year campaign by the agency's clandestine service for permission to destroy the tapes, culminating in a November 2005 destruction order from the service's director, Jose A. Rodriguez Jr.

Ah yes, the destruction of the Torture Tapes. One can only hope that move was illegal enough to strike fear into the hearts of every asshole that took part in the decision. Its a good read, and I highly recommend you check it out my dear reader.

Al-Qaeda did it. Its all Al-Qaeda's fault. Every nasty, horrific thing that has transpired in the last 6 years is the fault of Al-Qaeda. This includes of course the killing of Benazir Bhutto.

Yeah right..

So why is it then that Robert Fisk draws many parallels today in his piece for the Independent that go directly to Musharraf? From Fisk's article:

It doesn't, after all, take much to comprehend that the hated elections looming over Musharraf would probably be postponed indefinitely if his principal political opponent happened to be liquidated before polling day. So let's run through this logic in the way that Inspector Ian Blair might have done in his policeman's notebook before he became the top cop in London.

Question: Who forced Benazir Bhutto to stay in London and tried to prevent her return to Pakistan? Answer: General Musharraf.

Question: Who ordered the arrest of thousands of Benazir's supporters this month? Answer: General Musharraf.

Question: Who placed Benazir under temporary house arrest this month? Answer: General Musharraf.

Question: Who declared martial law this month? Answer General Musharraf.

Question: who killed Benazir Bhutto?

Er. Yes. Well quite.

Tomorrows Independent has a good read up as well on this subject. Like, why didn't Bhutto's husband want an autopsy? In fact, according to the current Prime Minister of Pakistan..her husband insisted that there not be an autopsy. From Sunday's edition:

Suspicions over the complicity of Pervez Musharraf's government in the killing were fueled by its failure to order a postmortem, regardless of Mr Zardari's wishes, and the fact that the scene of the bombing was washed down with a high-pressure hose within an hour, removing potential forensic evidence. Under the criminal law of Pakistan, an autopsy should have been mandatory, according to a leading lawyer, Athar Minallah.

"It is absurd because without autopsy it is not possible to investigate," he said. "Is the state not interested in reaching the perpetrators of this heinous crime, or was there a cover-up?"

Christ, what a mess, what a coverup..what a freaking bunch of hooey.

The NYT talks race and Obama..

I have been waiting for someone in the MSM to play the race card. Many have danced around the subject, but finally the New York Times lays the “R” word right out there.

They take him to task for not talking enough about race. I have read blogs that have done the same. I am of the pov that we all want the best life possible, regardless of race. We all want the war to end, regardless of race. None of us, regardless of race wants to choose between gas for our cars and medication for our health, just as an example. We all want a good job and to make the best life possible for ourselves and our families.

From the NYT writeup:

His style is more conciliatory than confrontational, more technocrat than preacher. Compared with many older politicians, he tends to speak about race indirectly or implicitly, when he speaks about it at all.

It sounds to me like the boyz and girlz at the old Grey Lady are trying to egg Obama on. I hope he doesn’t fall for it and take the bait.

Because the media should report what is going on, it shouldn’t lay down the agenda. They already have an overblown view of their power as it is. At least they do quote him accurately. I tend to agree that there are subjugated whites as well, and the common thread is poverty. Yes, people of color will get the short end of the stick based solely on their skin tone..but I appreciate that Obama includes all poor people when he talks about an issue. From the NYT piece:

After Hurricane Katrina, he did not attribute the lumbering federal response to the race of most of the storm’s victims. “The incompetence was color-blind,” he said, adding that the real stumbling block was indifference to the problems of the poor. After six black teenagers were charged with attempted murder in the beating of a white schoolmate in the “Jena Six” case in Louisiana, he said the criminal justice system needed fixing to ensure equal justice “regardless of race, wealth or circumstances.”

Even African American’s want Obama to talk more about race, as witnessed by Jesse Jackson’s inane comment that Obama “needs to stop acting like he’s white” recently. People of all colors seem to want to make it a race-related issue, Obama’s candidacy. Its all bullshit in my book. The bottom line is we are all humans and our color, sexuality and religion or lack thereof doesn’t matter one fucking iota.

So I was getting my jaw all jacked up as I read the Times article. I was mumbling to myself as the cats looked quizzically at me. Then the article allowed Obama to address the ‘issue’ he never seems to address. They went into his reasoning for how he views issues as not just a black issue. As a brown bitch who lives in a white world, I can relate to Obama’s pov on issues of race. I am only half brown so I know both sides of the issue. Obama has this to say in the writeup;

“Beneath all the differences of race and region, faith and station, we are one people.”

Obama was elected to a district that was evenly mixed. His ad’s that use prominent white folks is pointed out in the article. But he defended himself and his actions thusly:

In a telephone interview, Mr. Obama denied that he had spoken less about race issues than other candidates. But he said he focused when possible on “the universal issues that all Americans care about.” His aim, he said, is “to build broader coalitions that can actually deliver health care for all people or jobs that pay a living wage or all the issues that face not only black Americans but Americans generally.”

He suggested that his critics were comparing him not with Mr. Edwards or Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton but with Mr. Jackson and Mr. Sharpton. “That comparison is one that isn’t appropriate,” he said. “Because neither Reverend Jackson nor Reverend Sharpton is running for president of the United States. They are serving an important role as activists and catalysts but they’re not trying to build a coalition to actually govern.”(emphasis mine)

Julian Bond has the last word in the article: “A portion of black voters want Obama to give them some raw meat,” said Julian Bond, chairman of the board of the N.A.A.C.P. “Because they want so badly to have their concerns addressed and highlighted, and they expect it of him because he’s black.”

When will we ever get past race in this country?

I am still not sold on Obama, for various reasons, his lack of time in grade the major reason. The bulk of his experience is at the local and state level. But his color never entered into my mind.

It shouldn’t for anyone.

California malpractice laws limit justice for all

If you think about it..that was the main reason given for instituting them right? So people couldn't take 'advantage' of the system? I never bought that bullshit, but it seems to have had a detrimental effect on the ability of people who have been wronged by the medical community to get justice, or..in some cases..their pound of flesh when a loved ones dies because of a doctors incompetence. The LA Times has an interesting read on it which really paints a bleak picture that lawyers won't take a case because there isn't enough money in it anymore.

In 1975, California enacted legislation capping malpractice payments after an outcry from doctors and insurers that oversized awards and skyrocketing insurance rates were driving physicians out of the state.

The frivolous lawsuit excuse is pure bullshit to me. Judges and jury's refuse to award big money to cases that have very little going for them in the malpractice department. Pain and suffering is what the law limited..to $250,000 a case. There is no limit on loss of future wages or other extenuating circumstances.

Notice the quote whines about the cost to insurance companies. Fuck those guys. They are not our friends and they do anything within their power to fuck anyone that attempts to collect money after years of faithfully paying their premiums in many cases..hell in all cases. The health insurance industy is probably the worst at it. Malpractice insurance isn't my forte' but I swear I have had enough doctors in my life that had no business practicing medicine, and I have heard enough horror stories to make my whole head of hair go gray.

So it was with interest I read the LAT writeup. The Docs and their insurance companies are quite happy with the outcome since the law was passed. The fees for malpractice insurance have risen less in Cali than most anywhere else due to the law. Other states have seen the difference in retaining doctors and passed their own similar laws.

But who needs protecting the most here? Insurance companies or the consumer? From the writeup:

Critics say it is increasingly preventing victims and their families from getting their day in court, especially low-income workers, children and the elderly. Their reasoning: The cap on pain and suffering has never been raised nor tied to inflation.
Meanwhile, the costs of putting on trials are often paid by attorneys and continue to rise each year. That means those who rely mainly on pain and suffering awards -- typically people who didn't make much money at the time of their injury -- are increasingly unattractive to lawyers.

Some states are reexamining their caps on pain and suffering. But not Cali. Here are some findings regarding Cali's malpractice laws:

Yet a Times analysis of state court records, physician payment data and insurer financial records suggests that the cap is increasingly preventing families such as the Stewarts from getting their day in court.
Among the findings:
* Court malpractice filings have fallen in eight of the 10 most populous counties in California that track such information. In Los Angeles, they're down 48% since 2001 to their lowest per-capita level in nearly four decades. In Orange County, they fell 29% over the same period

* At Kaiser Permanente, where members must resolve malpractice claims in arbitration rather than court, claims have fallen almost 20% since 2001.

* The number of payments to victims and their families across the state was down 24% since 1991, according to a review of a federal government database of nearly half a million claims. Nationally, the decline over the same period was 10%.

* The malpractice earnings of California insurers has far outpaced national averages in recent years. According to financial reports, insurers in the state have paid out just 39 cents of every premium dollar since 1991. The national average was 63 cents.

Bullshit on a stick. To continue reading the writeup, click here. I really have to say it might jack your jaw just a tad. It's amazing how special interest groups get all the breaks. I am not blaming the medical industry, I am blaming the insurance industry once again. Their business models suck and everything is aimed at saving them money. When members of the medical profession come out against the malpractice law and it's built in limitations like this..you know its wrong.

The Path to a National Popular Vote

The Path to a National Popular Vote

By David Sirota
Creators Syndicate, 12/28/07

Right now, many are frustrated about Iowa and New Hampshire voters having such oversized influence in America’s presidential elections. In a few months, as the general election campaign unfolds, we will be similarly frustrated about Ohio and Florida. Who arbitrarily gave this handful of states the disproportionate power to determine our national political path?

When it comes to the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary, the answer is the parties. They decide which states select nominees first. In the general election, the culprit is the Electoral College. Most states award their electoral votes on a winner-take-all basis. By no matter what margin presidential candidates win your state, they get all your state's electoral votes. That means if you don't live in a "battleground" like Florida or Ohio whose statewide vote is perpetually up for grabs, you are ignored.

The nominating system is easily modified. Parties can add early primary and caucus states if they choose. Changing the general election, on the other hand, looks much harder. The Electoral College and its negative consequences seem locked into the Constitution.

But the operative word is "seem."

Like her father and brothers..Bhutto silenced.

Bhutto had a better shot at ferreting out Al-Qaeda than Musharraf on his best day. She knocked their dicks in the dirt in the 90's and would do it again.

Musharraf..not so much. Billions of our bucks can't get that fuckwit to wipe out the Al-Qaeda strongholds.

Her family history of assassination had to of crossed her mind many times since she went home to Pakistan. Now, there is no one to step into her shoes.

Kind of leaves the field open for Musharraf doesn't it? He gained by her death today. Methinks he was culpable. A strong woman in a Muslim nation is a threat and she had to have known that.

She would of created a secular government. Her muslim faith was anchored in moderation. She was educated at Harvard and Oxford for the love of pete. This woman had to of known the risks and still went forward with her movement to bring Democracy to Pakistan.

Bush of course is backing the wrong horse..figures. Like Musharraf he gave lip service to Bhutto's murder today, giving all of 10 minutes of his time to speak to his BFF Musharraf about what today's assassination means to the upcoming elections in Pakistan.

Bhutto had mainstream support and she knew it and Musharraf knew it. Now, its all gone to shit and the status quo will be maintained as long as Musharraf stays in power.

The status quo is Al-Qaeda will continue to to reign and Musharraf will continue to stall and take our money with a smile on his lips.

Damn fucking shame if you ask me. Fucking criminal too...

Bush tries to push through Justice Dept appointment..Senate says not so fast frat boy.

From AP via TruthOut:

A nine-second session gaveled in and out by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., prevented Bush from appointing as an assistant attorney general a nominee roundly rejected by majority Democrats. Without the pro forma session, the Senate would be technically adjourned, allowing the president to install officials without Senate confirmation .
The business of blocking Bush’s recess appointments was serious. It represents an institutional standoff between Congress and the president that could repeat itself during Congress’ vacations for the remainder of Bush’s presidency.

Way to go Webb! Warms the cockles of my little black heart don’t you know? The individual in question is Steven Bradbury, acting chief of the Justice Department’s Office of Legislative Counsel. Bush nominated Bradbury for the job and asked the Senate to remove the “acting” in his title. Seems Bradbury signed two secret memo’s in 2005 that allowed the CIA to use “harsh interrogation techniques” on those damn terrorists.

Another interesting part of this cat and mouse game is that a bill sent to a president automatically becomes law 10 days after he receives it, excluding Sundays of course, unless he vetoes it:

That could be the fate of two bills Congress passed last week. One growing out of the Virginia Tech massacre makes it harder for people with mental illness records to buy guns. The other makes it easier for journalists and others to obtain government documents through the Freedom of Information Act. The FOIA bill, for example, would become law on New Year’s Eve if not vetoed before then, according to Senate Judiciary Committee officials.

The gun bill is H.R. 2640. The Freedom of Information Act bill is S. 2488.

Benazir Bhutto assassinated

She was far from perfect but she was a better alternative than Musharraf. At a rally this morning she was shot and killed with at least 20 of her supporters murdered in the process as well. From the MSNBC article:

A party security adviser said Bhutto was shot in the neck and chest as she got into her vehicle, then the gunman blew himself up. No group has claimed responsibility.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene of the bombing could see body parts and flesh scattered at the back gate of the park where Bhutto had spoken. He counted about 20 bodies, including police, and could see many other wounded people.

Musharraf gave lip service to her killing saying; "I want to express my resolve and seek the cooperation from the entire nation and we will not rest until we eliminate these terrorists and root them out."-If he wanted to get rid of the wingnuts, he has had years to do so. He is part of the problem, not the answer to Pakistan's problems.

Bhutto's return to Pakistan had fueled the opposition to Musharraf's military regime. She originally had aligned herself with her former nemisis Nawaz Sharif, but that didn't last long since she wanted to institute talks with the Musharraf regime and Sharif refused to take part in such negotiations.

Bhutto and her husband had been tried in abstentia for corruption, the ruling was later overturned.

How this will affect the scheduled elections in January is unknown at this point. It was a three-way horserace between Musharraf, Bhutto and Sharif. A nuclear-laden country, Pakistan has received over $10 million in 'aid' from the US to fight terrorism.

That has worked out well hasn't it?

Online Pakistani tv here. Kinda choppy however.

OpEdNews-Home for Ron Paul supporters?

Seems it has become just that over there. Check out this new post about Paul. It does NOT contain any references or support links for all the verbage spewed on behalf of Ron Paul..interesting no? So I supported my pov on Paul with links in my comment there, which I will post here:

Facts about Ron Paul

His voting record shows he votes with the Repub party line 75% of the time. Source: http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/p000583/

Key Votes and Pauls vote on those, if he voted at all:

Vote 40: H R 6: This bill would repeal tax cuts to oil companies and mandate that they pay a fee to remove oil from the Gulf of Mexico. It would also fund renewable energy programs. The act would repeal a tax break that oil and gas firms received in 2004. That break effectively lowered their corporate tax rates. It would also bar oil companies from bidding on new federal leases unless they pay a fee or renegotiate improperly drafted leases from the late '90s. Those leases did not require royalty payments on Gulf of Mexico oil production. Oil firms would pay a "conservation fee" for oil taken from the gulf.-Paul voted NO on this one along the Repub party line

Vote 18: H R 2: This bill would increase the federal minimum wage from $5.15 an hour to $7.25 an hour over two years..-Paul voted NO on this along the (R) party line

Vote 135: H R 4297: Extended the Bush tax cuts.-Paul voted yes along the (R) party line

Vote 6: H RES 5: Instituted a number of changes in the ethics rules that govern the conduct of individual members of Congress.-Paul voted NO along the (R) party line

Ron Paul has missed 315 votes (27.2%) during the current Congress.Source: http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/p000583/

Ronald Paul has sponsored 350 bills since Jan 7, 1997, of which 345 haven't made it out of committee (Extremely Poor) and 0 were successfully enacted. Source: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/person.xpd?id=400311

His voting record sucks, his bill sponsorship sucks and his environmental support sucks..a real good candidate for anyone that supports Big Oil, wants a President that can't get anything done or one who won't show up for work over a quarter of the time.

Half Past Autumn, the Life and Works of Gordon Parks.

Mr. Parks was a photographer, novelist, journalist, poet, musician and filmmaker. His works are chronicled in a documentary I watched Sunday on HBO. I have admired Mr. Parks works since I was in high school, but was unfamiliar with his musical talents. This wonderful documentary starts at his birth and goes through his entire life. Its a beautifully made piece, with plenty of Mr. Park's photography, musical compositions and interviews with people, famous and non-famous, that impacted his life.

A great synopsis of his life is contained here on a website which mirrors the movie's trip though his works. Bigotry and racism were part of Gordon Parks life and it has a place in his work and this documentary as well. His fashion photography was also a part of his life I was unaware of. Below are a few of his photo's, the first is the well known American Gothic, shot in 1942.
The second and third are of his fashion shoots when he was living in Paris for Life magazine.

Parks was a truly gifted and talented man of various mediums..who never finished high school at a time when African Americans in college were rare and almost non-existent. He went on to receive over 40 honorary college degrees. For a great taste of his various types of photography..check out this site hosted by Kodak.

Ron Paul, good for progressives? Oh please..

Rob from OpEdNews did a piece recently about how he supports Ron Paul and why other progressives should as well. After I choked on my morning cuppa and read it several times, I was astonished that he would go the route he took to make his point. I guess in the long run, if you have to pick a Rethug to support, RP would stand a better chance than any of the rest of the current crop of jackasses.

But not with this Leftwing Nutjob folks..no sir, no way, no-fucking-how. Now, if I had to live under a Rethug rule..I guess then perhaps I might be able to say Paul would be the best of the slimy lot..but not by much, if at all.

Back to Mr. Kall's writeup. He also posted it over at DailyKos and was promptly tarred and feathered by a bunch of wingnuts. I know..not all Kos folks are wingnuts..but they surely don't like individuals that hold alternative pov's to theirs..thats a fact. You can be as liberal as they come but if you somehow step on their Kos-like toes..all hell breaks loose and they come gunning for ya and want you banned asap. Well, I slogged through many of the OpEd comments and the DailyKos comments where I found the following video:

I heart this guy..really I do..I like how he thinks about Ron Paul and other issues. His blog is pretty good although not current, I might add as is his KosBlog. So, just consider this a little YouTube and blog-whoring for James Risser a good progressive voice in the vast Blogosphere that must have a busy life since he isn't blogging regularly any longer.

Jazz great Oscar Peterson passes..

The date is not known but it was announced today that 82-year old Oscar Peterson has died of kidney failure.

An huge influence on jazz for decades upon decades, Mr. Peterson lived in Canada at the time of his passing.

From the MSNBC writeup:

Peterson's impressive collection of awards include all of Canada's highest honors, such as the Order of Canada, as well as a Lifetime Grammy (1997) and a spot in the International Jazz Hall of Fame.

His growing stature was reflected in the admiration of his peers. Duke Ellington referred to him as "Maharajah of the keyboard," while Count Basie once said "Oscar Peterson plays the best ivory box I've ever heard."

Ron Paul calls evolution a 'theory'

Ron Paul calls evolution a 'theory'. H/T to Alternet and Manila Ryce, The Largest Minority for the story and the video. Paul is a doctor, and as such I find it incredible that he would call evolution a theory..but the wingnuts will eat it up!

J. Edgar Hoover wanted to suspend Habeas Corpus.

Newly declassified documents from the 1950's show that Hoover also wanted to imprison over 12,000 Americans he considered disloyal per an IHT article I perused this evening.

That's a sobering friggin thought. From the IHT article:

Hoover sent his plan to the White House on July 7, 1950, 12 days after the Korean War began. It envisioned putting suspect Americans in military prisons.

Hoover wanted President Harry Truman to proclaim the mass arrests necessary to "protect the country against treason, espionage and sabotage." The FBI would "apprehend all individuals potentially dangerous" to national security, Hoover's proposal said. The arrests would be carried out under "a master warrant attached to a list of names" provided by the bureau.

The names were part of an index that Hoover had been compiling for years. "The index now contains approximately twelve thousand individuals, of which approximately ninety-seven percent are citizens of the United States," he wrote. "In order to make effective these apprehensions, the proclamation suspends the Writ of Habeas Corpus."

Check it out. Seriously..The plan called for "the permanent detention" of 12,000 suspects at military bases as well as in federal prisons.

Some damn good slide guitar

Its football sunday and somehow, I just can't deal with political fare today..if that bums you out..so be it! DivShare can be choppy at times..so be patient ok? Its worth the wait!

The "Architect" finally gets his book deal.

First, thanks to The Carpetbagger Report for posting about this. I do love his take on Rover's shopping around for his 'deal'. You might wish to read his pov, and the deliciously nasty comments from his readers about Heir Rove, if so click the link above.

It seems Rove had visions of $3 mil in his head as the going price for his memoirs...'fraid not Krazy Karl. His dream never came to fruition. He received half of what he had envisioned.

Aw..too fucking bad. Seem's no one expects Rover to tell the truth..or at the very least spill his guts about what he did to foist George W. Bush on America for 8 friggin years. A quote from a publishing honcho:

Ashbel Green, a senior editor at Alfred A Knopf, said that Rove lacks the "personality" to fetch "the multimillion-dollar contracts of former Federal Reserve chair Alan Greenspan or former President Bill Clinton."

He lacks ethics too, but that's besides the point. Evidently he wasn't willing to cough up anything telling about The Shrub and publishers started falling by the wayside. It took Krazy Karl three long months to even get what he finally did.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I hope his book is on the mark-down table within weeks of its release. Recently, Ted Kennedy inked a book deal for $8 mil..bet Rover is feeling unloved this time of year... LOL. So, the Architect got stiffed, and I couldn't be happier..unless no one wanted to publish it. Mary the shrew Matalin's publisher Simon and Schuster got the rights..gee, thats a stellar recommendation..not!

Judge Kennedy gets cold feet.

He's doing the moonwalk my dear reader. Is he really jerking us out or what? From Findlaw, the results or lack of them..of todays Torture Tapes hearing:

US judge seems wary of opening inquiry into destruction of CIA interrogation videos

(AP) - WASHINGTON-A federal judge appeared reluctant Friday to investigate the destruction of CIA interrogation videotapes while the U.S. Justice Department is conducting its own inquiry.

U.S. District Judge Henry H. Kennedy is considering whether to delve into the matter and, if so, how deeply. The Bush administration is urging him not to act while it investigates.

"Why should the court not permit the Department of Justice to do just that?" Kennedy asked at a court hearing Friday.

Because Judge, the Justice Dept is one bunch of corrupt bags of batshit dude..seriously.

Edit: The NYT has this money quote from one of the Gitmo Lawyers, David H. Remes:

"Plainly, the government wants only foxes guarding the henhouse," he asserted in his motion. Considering the government's behavior so far, Mr. Remes argued, the Justice Department is not entitled to a presumption that it will do the right thing.

Hillary and friends playing the bully..

Angry Black Bitch has a good post up that informs us of the following:

Clinton Launches Obama Attack Web Sites

ABC News has learned that the campaign of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., has registered the names of two Web sites with the express goal of attacking her chief rival, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

It's the first time this election cycle a presidential campaign has launched a Web site with the express purpose of of launching serious criticisms on a rival.

That's right Hill..don't tell us what you want to do..just cheap shot your closest rival. Wotta load of fuckwittery this is. Its also a typical Rethug move, which doesn't surprise me in the least, but a Democrat that stoops this low is pure cow shit indeed. Swiftboating fits your smarmy ass so nicely Hillary Rodham-Clinton..seriously.

More on the visitor logs ruling..

From Jurist:

UPDATE 12-21: The White House said Thursday that it will appeal a Monday ruling [order, PDF] that held White House visitor logs to be public documents, asking a federal judge not to force the logs' disclosure in the meantime. On Monday, US District Judge Royce C. Lamberth rejected a Bush administration bid to have the logs treated as confidential presidential records. Visitor logs are compiled by the Secret Service, and thus subject to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests; the Bush administration had ordered that the logs be submitted to the White House, so that they would fall outside the domain of FOIA. Watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) brought the lawsuit, seeking logs regarding the White House visits of prominent conservative religious figures, including James Dobson and Jerry Falwell. AP has more.

In October, US District Judge Ricardo Urbina ordered the Secret Service to release visitor logs for the personal residence and office of Vice-President Dick Cheney. The order was issued following a lawsuit by the Washington Post, which requested the logs in June while researching White House ties to political lobbyists. The Justice Department filed an appeal against the order last week. In a second ruling issued Monday by Lamberth, the judge said that CREW could not seek an injunction preventing the Secret Service from destroying visitor logs after they are turned over to the White House.

CIA agrees to play nice regarding Torture Tapes

Sure, and if you really buy that they will tell the House Intel committee all about the destruction of the Torture Tapes..I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell ya.

But the CIA's top lawyer, John A. Rizzo, will "testify about the matter, Congressional and intelligence officials said Wednesday" according to the NYT article linked above.

However, no one said anything about whether the chief of the agency's "clandestine service", Jose Rodriguez, who actually ordered the tapes destroyed in 2005, will sit down and chat about the incident with folks on the hill. So what exactly will anyone learn if he doesn't talk?

Not much is my guess. See, it seems if Jose talks, then all hell would break loose and, according to the write-up, "might involve complex negotiations over legal immunity at a time when the Justice Department and the intelligence agency were reviewing whether the destruction of the tapes broke any laws."

Don't forget, this is all lip service until the little set-to begins tomorrow in Judge Kennedy's courtroom at 11am over the destruction of said tapes, which totally ignored an earlier ruling by Judge Kennedy to protect all evidence of torture.

Ah, as Sir Walter Scott once said: What a tangled web we weave, When first we practice to deceive...

What stones he has!

Check out John "Crybaby" Bohner's response below(in red) to Hoyer in the Hill.com writeup about the Alternative Minimum Tax issue:

His remark came as a surprise, since it has widely been assumed that Democrats will give up their effort to “pay for” the AMT patch and go with the Senate plan to load the cost onto the deficit.

Hoyer’s statement came the morning after nearly 30 conservative Blue Dog Democrats signaled their discontent with the Senate AMT plan by voting with Republicans against an adjournment resolution.

Hoyer was asked about efforts to resolve the dispute. He said he had come to the 11 a.m. briefing directly from the meeting to resolve the impasse and did not know the “state of play on AMT.”

“There’s no deal” with the Blue Dogs, he said.

Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) pounced on the news, calling Hoyer’s remarks “another reminder that the Democrat majority’s priorities do not reflect those of the American people.”

“Democrats created the AMT, repeatedly voted against Republican efforts to abolish it entirely, and have failed to stop it’s impending assault on 23 million middle-class American taxpayers,” he said.

A Hoyer aide argued that Republicans had been obstructing them from passing a patch that does not add to the deficit. “Democrats have been trying for weeks to pass an AMT patch that does not add to the deficit and Senate Republicans have been blocking it,” the aide said. “We are again sending them a message that it is time to act like the fiscal conservatives they claim to be.”

An AMT patch must be passed soon to avoid a big tax hike. By waiting as long as they have, lawmakers have already raised the risk of a tax-filing mess that could provide fodder for political attacks. The IRS says it needs seven weeks from the time the president signs the AMT patch into law to update its forms and re-program its computers.

Twice this year, House Democrats have passed plans to stave off the AMT for a year with a “patch,” paid for with tax adjustments. Democrats say the adjustments raised revenue by closing loopholes used by wealthy hedge fund managers. Republicans called them tax increases. They both met defeat in the Senate.

I say it again..what stones that sumbitch has!

Wexler's Impeach petition hits 100k in signatures.

The site started up just a few days ago, and baby..its taken off! From Democrats.com:

Wexler's goal was 50,000 signatures but with your support, Wexler's petition passed 100,000!(105736 as of 8:30 pm leftcoast time)

These 7 voted to kill Kucinich's bill on 11/6, so they need to CHANGE their positions and fulfill their oath of office to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign AND domestic: Howard Berman (CA-28), Artur Davis (AL-07), William Delahunt (MA-10), Zoe Lofgren (CA-16), Jerrold Nadler (NY-08), Linda Sanchez (CA-39), and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20).

Please email all House Judiciary Democrats through this petition:
http://www.democrats.com/topelosiandjudiciary

http://www.wexlerwantshearings.com

Wexler is thrilled with your response, and he will hold a virtual town hall meeting on Thursday at 9 pm ET (6 pm PT) on Florida Progressive Radio with Kenneth Quinnell, co-hosted by Democrats.com.
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/fpc

Wexler has the support of two Judiciary Committee Democrats, Luis Gutierrez (IL-04) and Tammy Baldwin (WI-02). Five others are co-sponsors of H.Res. 333/H.Res. 799, Rep. Kucinich's Articles of Impeachment for Vice President Cheney: Steve Cohen (TN-09), Keith Ellison (MN-05), Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18), Hank Johnson (GA-04), and Maxine Waters (CA-35).

But that leaves 13 Judiciary Committee Democrats who have NOT called for impeachment hearings. These 6 voted to send Kucinich's bill to Judiciary on 11/6, so they should publicly support Wexler's efforts: John Conyers (MI-14), Bobby Scott (VA-03), Brad Sherman (CA-27), Betty Sutton (OH-13), Mel Watt (NC-12), and Anthony Weiner (NY-09).

It won't take you more than a second or two folks..sign the petition on Wexlers's site..what do you have to lose?

Huckabee's floating cross Christmas ad

Hardball just ran all the candidates Christmas commercials today. With all the early-ass caucus's and primaries this silly season, it's ridiculous to watch these candidates say Happy Holidays and in the next breath vote for me.

The worst commercial was Hucks. He actually had a freaking cross roll into the picture at the end of his. Even Matthews couldn't believe it. Everyone else just had the good ol' Xmas tree in the background..or a roaring fireplace..but not Huckabee. Nope, he had to get that good time religion 'product placement' into the picture.

I need to see if I can d/l it and post it here..un-fucking-believable.

Update: FOUND IT..catch the 'floating cross' behind ol Mikey. Talk about product placement..this one takes the gold.well, it just goes right along with the push polling being done in his name, don't ya know?

this version..lol..has an overlay soundtrack that isn't part of the actual commercial.

White House demands correction from NYT

But the important part of this story is...the White House did NOT demand a correction to the language in the main body of the writeup. From the Editor and Publisher article:

One of the top national stories of the day is the front-pager in The New York Times which suggests that White House involvement in the controversy surrounding the destruction of the CIA "torture tapes" was much wider than previously known.

The White House has kicked back against the Times on various other front-page reports in recent years but today it has asked for something specific: a "correction" of the headline's deck.

The Hill, the Washington, D.C. newspapers, reports, "Catherine Mathis, senior vice president of corporate communications for the newspaper, stated that the sub-headline has been changed, adding that a correction would be printed. However, Mathis also pointed out that the White House did not challenge the contents of the article." (emphasis mine)

Ain't that special? ;)

Huckabee and push polling

He is denying any involvement of course, but none the less, cretins are doing it in his name. From HuffPo:

Patrick Davis, the executive director of Common Sense Issues, confirmed to The Huffington Post that his group is behind the New Hampshire push-polling calls which are targeted at a broad group of voters statewide.

"Our group is completely independent of the Huckabee campaign," Davis, a political consultant based in Colorado Springs, said. "We are running an independent effort." But Davis' group has also set up a website - TrustHuckabee.com - and has conducted similar push-polling efforts touting Huckabee in Iowa.

Ah, the biblethumper is reaping the benefits of this nasty, many times illegal method of reaching voters. Typical Theocrat bullshit tactic..slime your competition with lies and innuendo while you thump that bible. Tweety Matthews interviewed an individual yesterday on his show that got one of the calls. It was of course aimed at making McCain look like a horrible, disgusting, gay-loving humanoid.

Re: Torture Tapes,Here comes the Judge...

Seems BushCo might have a bad case of indigestion this evening. From TPMmuckraker we get some lovely news:

Judge Orders Hearing on Destruction of CIA Torture Tapes

And the judicial branch enters the fray.

Much to the administration's chagrin, Judge Henry H. Kennedy Jr. has ordered a hearing on the CIA's destruction of the torture tapes for this Friday at 11 AM.

This IS sweet music to my ears. Judge Kennedy is a Clinton-appointed judge, who also ordered BushCo, back in 2005, to safeguard "all evidence and information regarding the torture, mistreatment, and abuse of detainees now at the United States Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay."

I love you Judge Kennedy..not in that way of course, but as a protector of the constitution and all things anti-torture. Here is hoping you give BushCo major heartburn Friday @ 11am.

Amazingly BushCo opposed this hearing. LOL..like that is friggin news my dear reader. Bush's lawyers argued that the hearing "is both unnecessary and potentially disruptive." Oh please..its all unnecessary according to the Idiot-in-Chief and his minions. Keep us all in the dark and feed us bullshit is their modus operandi. The NYT article goes in depth as to the arguments the Bush administration will use to attempt to get this tossed.

FindLaw has a good writeup on it as well here, plus copies of the court doc's.

Stay tuned..

Judge rules visitor logs are public records

Its the people's White House and evidently a judge agreed with that today. Bush isn't going to like that and it makes me friggin giddy don't ya know? From the AP writeup:

White House visitor logs are public documents, a federal judge ruled Monday, rejecting a legal strategy that the Bush administration had hoped would get around public records laws and let them keep their guests a secret.

The Secret Service has historically kept the logs within their sphere of control, that is until BushCo came into town. What is Bush trying to hide from us?

The visitations of neocon religious leaders. LOL. I was thinking Jeff Gannon's visits my dear reader. CREW, the big watchdog group out of DC had requested the records and had to pay lawyers to take the FOIA request all the way to court. Such bullshit.

U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth ordered the S.S. to "turn over visitor logs regarding nine conservative religious commentators, including James Dobson, Gary Bauer and Jerry Falwell".

Praise Jesus!

In a second case, the White House is seeking to destroy visitor logs of the visits of Jack Abramoff. Yes, that Jack Abramoff! The W.H. went so far as to "have the case moved to another judge by consolidating it with a similar lawsuit before U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer, an appointee of President Bush".

CREW is also the party involved in this case as well. On Monday, Judge Collyer and Judge Lamberth agreed to consolidate the two Abramoff-related cases before Lamberth, even though Collyer in accordance with long-standing courthouse practice would have dealt with both because the case she was hearing was the older of the two.

Lamberth hates secrecy according to the AP writeup. Isn't that friggin grand?
