Laughter is a good thing, and more graduation ceremonies should include laughter. Afterall, these poor sots are heading out into the hard, cruel world and who knows when they will laugh again.
Editor&Publisher has a fine writeup about Stephen Colberts speech to the graduating class at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. This is a small college, the graduating class was only 250. There were also 4 THOUSAND other attendees. Colbert can sure pull em in can't he? Some of his content was funny as expected, some serious E&P has some of the highlights of his speech. Hope the Link above still works, these guys don't give nothing for gratis, fuckers.
I will give you a couple of them for free however:
"I don't know if they've told you what's been happening in the world while you've been matriculating. The world is waiting for you people with a club....They are playing for KEEPS out there, folks."-This one was semi-serious I would say..because they are playing for keeps on the rapture-crazy right.
“It’s time for illegal immigrants to go — right after they finish (building) those walls." People keep saying immigrants built America, “but here's the thing, it's built now. I think it was finished in the '70s sometime. From this point it’s only a touch-up and repair job."
“God wrote (the Bible) in English for a reason: So it could be taught in our public schools.”
And his final parting remark was dead serious:"Cynics always say no. But saying yes begins things. Saying yes is how things grow. Saying yes leads to knowledge. Yes is for young people. So for as long as you have the strength to, say yes.
