Politifact and Jon Stewart- A match made in heaven?

First off m'dear reader, I consider Jon Stewart to be a comedian first and foremost. His less than stellar history of lobbing softball questions at guests whom he has previously, viciously and deliciously satirized is the reason I consider him a gifted and hysterically funny comedian/satirist, nothing more. Some folks like to consider him more than a comedian, a truth-teller of sorts or even a journalist at times..not moi.

There are three places I look when refuting rightwingers on Faux Noise, specifically Glenn Beck lies and Faux's general and usually completely untrue, bullshit rightwing nutterville, talking points: Politifact, FactCheck.org and MediaMatters.  All three are quite good reference sites that back up what they say with ..well, facts.

So, when Politifact said Stewarts premise that Fox News viewers are the most consistently misinformed was a lie, I had to agree w/them..although it wasn't easy. The night after that article went up at Politifact, Stewart apologized for saying what he did about the idiots...I mean viewers that tune in regularly to Faux. He then went on to use the site to point out 21 separate, but equal lies told repeatedly on Faux and two that actually won Lie-of-the-year awards from Politifact. It's a great segment..watch it below:

Andrea Mitchell v Jon Stewart: Who lobbed softballs for Rummy?

Hands down it was Jon Stewart. I didn't watch TDS last night, I dvr'd it, but after a couple of minutes watching it this morning, I really don't have anything good to say about Stewart's cough..interview of Rumsfeld. Softball city is how I see it.

On the other hand, Andrea Mitchell's pummeling of Rummy on her MSNBC show a couple of days ago was pretty damn good. She fired question after question at him, and didn't give him time to even come up for air. When he tried to blow off a question from her, she came right back at him tossing facts at him that backed up her assertions.

Stewart on the other hand, looked like a hand-picked Faux Noise comrade.

Nice going Jon. When did you start pitching for the other team?  Perhaps I expected too much of Stewart. Mitchell on the other hand, was better than I expected.

Jon Stewart: You can't spell Gold without God.

Jon Stewart slaps Glenn Beck around a bit. It’s hilarious and fucking sad..all at the same time. But remember…Beck only sold 17 tickets at his Boston showing, so the rightwing nuttery factory isn’t hitting on all cylinders. Thank Gawd.

Jon Stewart on Palin- Spot-friggin-on!

This is fantastic. Stewart really hits all his marks on his 'special comment' about Sarah the Impaler.

His best line:
"when you peel back the pretty, shooty layers of the Palin onion, there's no onion. It's just a conservative boiler plate mad lib: 'Freedom is good and taxes are--ooh I need an adjective--how about, I don't know, silly?'
I love this man.

Jon Stewart roughs up Faux News..

He dissects the Faux News wingnuts over their response to Obama’s speech in Egypt. I do love this line about Faux’s talking heads..which include the idiot Michelle Malkkkin:

“What a torture it must be for such pretty people to see such ugly things.”

Negativity always abounds in the Faux Noise crowd. Do those assholes ever see anything positive? Nah..

Jim Cramer shows up on the Daily Show.

The entire interview can be seen in three parts here. Jon Stewart, as far as I am concerned, was as serious as a heart attack and was a true journalist last night during his interview with Jim Cramer from CNBC. He pointed out time and time again last night, that CNBC is nothing more than a shill for Wall Street and the financial industry, they never do anything negative about the industry or any investigative pieces on the industry. Cramer was apologetic at best and a whiner at worst. Quite a bit of the interview was left on the cutting room floor due to time constraints. But the link above will show you the entire interview uncut. Check out part one and two below.

Jon Stewart said last night, and I believe it to be true...that there are two stock markets...the real one that is dangerous and volatile and the one shown us on networks like CNBC, who shamelessly represent only the interests of Wall Street.

Jon Stewart vs Jim Cramer and CNBC

I don't know if anyone is following the skirmish between Jon Stewart and CNBC's Jim Cramer but it's very interesting and funny as hell. From Alternet who has the whole sordid mess from beginning to end:

The fight between Jon Stewart and CNBC started out with a "brutal, but utterly hilarious" attack on Rick Santelli's infamous rant against homeowners, and an insightful look at just how wrong CNBC got it in the days and months before the econopocalypse:

Stewart aped Santelli's newsgrabbing shouty-faced blubber from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, coyly admitting, "I have to say, I find cheap populism very arousing." And then, for eight minutes, Stewart at his arch best (with the help of the crackerjack Daily Show research team) went on an absolute tear and burned CNBC right down to the doorframes. "If only I'd followed CNBC's advice, I'd have a million dollars, provided I'd started with a hundred million dollars."

Then, Cramer went after Stewart on his show, Morning Joe and the Today Show. Below is Jon Stewarts response:

Cramer will be on The Daily Show Tonight...Its must see tv!

Oh Hell Yes!!!!

A NYT article headline asks the following question:

Is Jon Stewart the Most Trusted Man in America?

If watching Stewart is the only way most young people under the age of 30 get their news, then yes he should be trusted and viewed as a journalist and his show as a news source. With that said...

He also has a great comic sense and makes you laugh through the tears. We all need that. When I can't take the news 'straight' anymore, I watch The Daily Show. I dvr it nightly. Some choice bits from the writeup:

Jon Stewart, on the set of “The Daily Show,” tied Tom Brokaw, Brian Williams, Dan Rather and Anderson Cooper among admired journalists. And that was last year.

*snip*

Most important, at a time when Fox, MSNBC and CNN routinely mix news and entertainment, larding their 24-hour schedules with bloviation fests and marathon coverage of sexual predators and dead celebrities, it’s been “The Daily Show” that has tenaciously tracked big, “super depressing” issues like the cherry-picking of prewar intelligence, the politicization of the Department of Justice and the efforts of the Bush White House to augment its executive power.

He does get serious on certain guests. His sarcastic, flippant style is one of my favorite things. His idiotic laugh will get me laughing as well. Watch him for the comedy or watch him for the news...I don't care which...but we all need a little Daily Show in our lives at this point in time. Its three pages long, so bring your lunch if your going to read Michiko Kakutani's article about Stewart and The Daily Show.

Hillary to appear on The Daily Show tonight.

This is her second visit to the show. The press release from TDS below:

Hillary Clinton -- the first viable presidential candidate with a working uterus -- will be a guest on the Daily Show this upcoming Monday night -- the eve of the March 4th primaries in Texas, Ohio and several other less sexy states -- to presumably talk about politics, patriotism and pant suits.

The link above also has the videos from her last visit. I would have to call bullshit on the remark about pantsuits.
